Wow! What a fabulous start the Olympic Games 2012!
London opened the Olympic Games with a spectacular display of the country’s past and present. It was done using an array of technology, music and lighting. With over 3 billion people tuning in to watch, the £27 million ($40.5 billion AUS), we salute director Danny Boyle. As a result he created an absolute master piece.
Danny, who’s previous work includes Slumdog Millionaire, used 20,000 volunteers to make up his cast and 2,000 crew, staff and suppliers. Undoubtedly, this magnificent event certainly got people revved up and ready for Olympic fever.
Highlights for me, included the Daniel Craig/Queen ensemble and David Beckham. The awesome music mash up which followed a young couple through the best of British music. Thus, the story of the UK’s history was told perfectly and brought tears to many eyes at times.
As a piece of art, I thought it worked wonderfully. Because it pulled a story together with likable characters which met every single objective that’s required of an opening ceremony. Blood, sweat and tears no doubt, went into the creation of this and it certainly served it’s purpose.
The opening ceremony made Britons proud, ex pats homesick and every other nation wishing they could be there to experience the delights of this creation. Indeed an event that will, no doubt, remain with many for a long time.
