first impression

First impressions last so what impression do people have of you?

We now live in a world where we’re told not to care what others think and that it’s their business if someone dislikes you…  When you’re in business though or ‘sell’ for a living, then it needs to be 100% understood that people buy from people, so what people do and do not think of you is completely your business.

It takes someone 9-17 seconds to form an impression of you.  Changing that impression can take months so get it right the first time with our 4 tips on how to achieve a good first impression:

1.       Website

You should begin by taking a look at your website, as quite often this is the first impression someone has of your business.  Ensure your content is easy to understand and that your site is simple to navigate.

2.       Content

Ensure you perceive yourself as someone who is knowledgeable in their field.  If potential customers can see you are knowledgeable in the latest trends, news and the market that you are promoting it will be easier to create a good impression.

3.         First contact – email/phone

It costs nothing to be polite.  A ‘How are you..’ in a telephone conversation or email can work wonders, and a please and thank you go very far.  Each phone call and email enquiry needs to be treated as a potential customer.  If they don’t use your services they could quite likely refer you to others if they think you’re worth it.

4.       First Meeting

Well groomed people get the sale.  Make sure you come across well by having a clean, well groomed appearance.  Please note this doesn’t mean you should wear a suit and have your hair done that morning, but the better groomed you are the more likely someone will engage your services.  Think about how you would feel if you went to a networking event and were met with someone who hadn’t showered, had greasy hair and dirty clothes???  You’re hardly going to beat a path to speak with them.  A shower, clean outfit, hair tied back or combed at least (men!) can make a huge difference.

The above covers the majority of work ‘first impressions’ however everyone’s experiences are different.  If you’ve had a good or bad experience then we’d love you to share in the comments below.

Remember you only get one chance to make a good first impression.
