Today I want to talk about what to do when you wake up and you feel unmotivated. Those days when all you want to do is get back into bed and hide under the covers.
Don’t give yourself a hard time
These things happen, so the important thing is to try not to give yourself a hard time about it.
First thing I recommend is to get up and get ready. Have a shower, do your hair, put on some make-up (men or women!), and put on your favourite outfit. If you’re male and you don’t need to do your hair, have a shower, and have a wash. If you’re female, put on an iPod as you put on your makeup. It’s up to you, whatever your ritual is in the morning, go and do that.
Ground Yourself
The second thing to do is to go and stand outside and ground yourself. Take a few deep breaths and hold space. Do some meditation and whatever it is that you need to do. However, make sure you’re outside in the fresh air and barefoot if you can.
The third thing I’m going to get you to do when you feel completely unmotivated is the one thing that you are stressed about, the one thing that you’re dreading in your day. Tackle this task first, whether it’s making an awkward phone call, going to a meeting that you’re not too thrilled to be going to, or going to a networking event that you don’t feel like going to.
Mindset Control
When it comes to mindset, your mind doesn’t understand what’s real and what isn’t real, so it will only know that you go into a meeting smiling, or you go to a networking event and you begin speaking to people or you make that call to that client. What happens is your brain is tricked into thinking ‘she’s okay so we’re all okay now and everything is fine’. So it’s really good to have a little time if you need to take a moment to yourself. Sit on the sofa and have a coffee, or catch up with a girlfriend or go to lunch, sit down and read a book…do whatever it is that you need to do as long as you pick yourself back up the next day and start afresh.
Feeling Unmotivated?
It’s when those mornings of feeling unmotivated start happening day after day that there may be something else at play, but we all have off days. I’m telling you this because today I am having one of those days. I started my day and went to a meeting and I called a client that I haven’t spoken to for a while but have been meaning to call. I have had such a busy week! So I did all of that stuff and this Friday I thought, ‘You know what? I’m going to take the afternoon off!’ Because if you can’t take one afternoon off every now and then in your own business to just be, then really, do you have a business of your own or are you just working, swapping your hours for money? That’s another whole blog topic!
So, if you find yourself waking up one morning and just feeling unmotivated to tackle anything, get up! Get up and get dressed, go outside and take some deep breaths. Then get stuck into your list of things and get a couple of things out of the way. After that, do what you need to do to make a little space for yourself, so that you can recharge and be ready to tackle everything tomorrow, motivated and energised.
I hope this helps. I’d love to hear your feedback. What do you do when you don’t have a great day? Let me know your thoughts.
