Online Marketing – Why Social Media Is Number 1
I was asked yesterday, what’s the number one thing you recommend, when it comes to Online Marketing.
It’s a tricky one because one channel leads to another, when you run it correctly. For example – Adverts – Social Media – Websites – Content Marketing – Webinars – Products – and on and on it goes.
Back to the original question though, if I had to pick one channel to use, it would definitely be Social Media.
WHY? Because you can use it in so many different ways.
+ Content
+ Promotion
+ Branding
+ Advertising
and most importantly
+ CONNECTIONS
Yes, ladies and gentlemen, Social Media is where connections are made. Pure and simple. After all isn’t that what us humans are seeking – connection?
When I hear people say ‘I hate Social Media’, or, ‘I don’t get anything out of Social Media’, then my answer is usually – you’re doing it wrong! Sorry to be Captain Obvious here, but if you are just out there to spam everyone with your promotional posts, yet never take the time to engage in a conversation or interact with others, then that’s neither connecting or engaging.
Folks, it’s time to get clear on your strategy, define your why and watch those connections grow.
There are so many opportunities to connect with people in Social Media, it’s ridiculous. For instance, when I decided to work with clients further afield in the USA and the UK, I simply targeted people in those countries. I found Social Media groups that related to my niche, wrote content to attract a bigger following and posted more on Social Media about my global business. This all happened using my laptop to find them and Skype to connect with them.
The funny thing is, Online Marketing wasn’t around when I was at school. In fact, it wasn’t even around when I went to University.
In 2015 I spoke to a group of Year 10 students at my old high school, about my journey. I was very open with the students and told them I had no idea what I wanted to do when I left school, or even University. However, I went on to work with billion dollar corporations and become a Business Owner, running a successful multi six figure, Marketing Agency, doing what I love.
I had to share with these teenagers, that I was an old school type, who grew up without the internet! I explained that even at University we’d take the donkey and cart out to the library to study (well not quite, but they got my gist!). Yet, here I am, managing and teaching Social Media, working with people all over the world on their Online Marketing Strategy, and supporting clients with channels that have only been around a decade
The majority of us embrace the digital world with such ease, and whether you love or hate it, it’s here to stay. If you want to talk strategy, then hit me up and book in for a session. If you want to talk about the good old days and 50p pints at the student union, you’ll find my memory a little hazy, but happy to discuss!
